To start off the show, we look at our Tarot Card for the week and we look for moments that relate to this card in our daily lives.
For this week, we chose the Six of Cups. The theme of this card is emotional development.
This card is just full of sweet, kind, childlike silliness and fun. To me, this card is saying, everything is going to be okay. You can relax, whatever is worrying you, let it go. You’re safe, you can be a carefree kid. And I think that’s an achievement. In a simple way, being able to let go, be kind to another person, and just enjoy life.
In the picture of the traditional Rider Waite Smith deck, there are two children. One child is handing a cup full of foliage and flowers to the smaller child, which is a very kind gesture. They’re sort of crouching down to get on the same level as the smaller child, too. And the smaller child is smiling and accepting the gift. It just seems like two happy children playing.
So there’s a nostalgia of looking back on joyful times in your life when everything was golden. When everything in your life was safe and happy and good.
You can hear Erica’s and Maggie’s stories related to the Six of Cups by listening to the episode.
Introduction
The topic of sex magic can be intimidating, awkward, uncomfortable for some. I myself am a little nervous to talk about it on such a public platform. This is because in many parts of the world sex is considered a taboo topic. And in the US in particular women are bombarded with patriarchal, puritanical views on the body and deification of the virginal woman.
We are taught that respectable women do not enjoy or want sex. Meanwhile, the female form is plastered on advertisements to sell anything from a boat to a cheeseburger.
Most witches enjoy the freedom from the patriarchy and the feminist values of the witchcraft practice. Even so, it can be difficult to overcome this socialization. Erica asked me earlier if I wanted to skip this episode and talk about something less… embarrassing because I was getting nervous. And I told her that that’s exactly why we shouldn’t. So here we are.
If you’re embarrassed, it’s okay. That’s part of overcoming our social conditioning. And if you’re not shy about your sexuality at all and want us to get to the good part, you’ll just need to wait a bit longer.
What is Sex Magic?
Basically sex magic is a type of magic that helps you build energy intentionally and release it through oragsm. A few things to make note of: sex magic does not require a male and female component. You can practice sex magic solo through masturbation, or with a partner, or in a group. It can be done with a long term partner or a one night stand.
Additionally, sex magic can be done by those who aren’t sexually active. It’s about claiming your power, understanding your body, and connecting to your needs and desires. Instead of releasing the energy you build up with orgasm, you can conserve it for another use.
At a basic level, sex magic is a method of intentionally using your body as a conduit for energy.
Why Practice Sex Magic?
For one thing, it can be fun. For another, it’s a really good way to get to know your body and what brings you pleasure. It’s more about learning to love yourself than it is about simply getting to the climax.
And keep in mind, you can use sex magic to manifest anything, not just sex and love and lust related things. The energy you build with arousal and passion is the same as the energy you build with a steady drum beat, chanting, focused meditation, and other methods.
So how could someone get started with sex magic?
Set the Mood
You’ll want to begin by setting the mood. In order to enhance the energetic build up and release, you’ll want to give yourself a sexy setting. This really depends on you and your preferences.
Some people love satin sheets and rose petals and champagne in tall flute glasses with strawberries.
Some people prefer a plush rug next to a crackling fire in the fireplace with hot chocolate and marshmallows to drink.
Someone else may like a warm bubble bath surrounded by candles and crystals and a plate of fresh fruit.
And someone else may want to be outside in a secluded and private area under the stars.
These are just examples, you might want something completely different.
You’ll also want to enter this as you would any other ritual or spellwork you do. Cleanse yourself and your space, set up an altar, cast a circle, ground and center, call in your correspondences. A combination of all, some, or none of these things.
Sex Magic Warnings
Before we get to some of the exercises, we wanted to mention consent and sex magic. If you plan to practice sex magic with a partner or other people, it’s a good idea to inform them. This is out of respect for them and also an opportunity to amplify the intention with the help of others.
Additionally, as with any group or religion where there is a power imbalance between a leader and a follower, the spiritual community of pagans and witches has a history of abuse. And abusers have been allowed to hide behind the secrecy of their tradition.
Teachers, mentors and group leaders should not pressure their students into sex, sexual activity, or non-consensual physical contact for any reason. And students, and group members should view this behavior as a red flag and a sign that this group is unsafe.
Consent is an expression of love and trust. It is required in a teacher student relationship. Everyone, no matter what their belief system, has a right to bodily autonomy, to practice in a way that is free of abuse and coercion, and to speak out about predators even if it breaks secrecy codes of the group.
Sex Magic Exercises
Breathing
Breathing is one of the easiest ways to build up energy in the body. Especially when paired with imagination. You can focus on any part of your body and imagine that each inhale sends breath to that spot and each exhale sends the breath flowing away again. Try focusing your breathing on your genitals and stimulate arousal.
You can also use breath to energize your body, filling yourself up with helpful energy as you inhale, and releasing unhelpful energy with your exhale.
Matching Breath with Movement
Breath not only helps us move energy around, but it also informs how our body moves. Anyone who practices yoga understands this. Breath can release tension, relax muscles, and deepen stretches. Focusing on your breath as your body moves and moving your body as you breathe can help you keep your focus on your intention.
Visualization
Visualization is a technique you can use while in a state of heightened arousal. Visualize your desired outcome: what does it look like, smell like, taste like, sound like, feel like? Channel all the electric energy in your body into this visualization, especially right as you orgasm.
Sacral Chakra
The Sacral Chakra is the energy center of sexuality, passion, and creation. When this chakra is balanced, you are more connected to your desires and what brings you pleasure. Balance it by practicing ecstatic dance and with orange crystals and spicy herbs.
Chanting
While in the heat of the moment, begin chanting a word or phrase related to your desired outcome. Don’t worry too much about what you’re saying or how it sounds. Just speak the desire into existence.
This post is brought to you by Ginger
MEDICINAL - Antibacterial; antifungal; anti-inflammatory; antioxidant; antiparasitic; antiseptic; aphrodisiac; tonic
Anxiety; Bloating; Cold & Flu symptoms; Depression; Menstrual cycle symptoms; Erectile dysfunction; Irritable bowel syndrome; Morning sickness; Motion sickness; Nausea; Stomach ache
Cautions: If you have a known allergy or hypersensitivity to turmeric or plants in the Zingiberaceae family, avoid utilizing this herb.
Although highly effective in curing morning sickness, pregnant women should not ingest excessive amounts of ginger during the day (which is easy to do if you’re eating ginger candy!!) due to it’s warming and moving properties.
Ginger may also cause adverse reactions when consumed alongside anticoagulant drugs (such as aspirin or Coumadin).
MAGICAL -Active; Mars; Fire, Water; Aries; Scorpio; Love; Passion; Protection; Abundance; Healing; Luck; Sensuality; Sexuality; Success; Prosperity
Draws adventure and new experiences. Promotes sensuality, sexuality, personal confidence, prosperity, and success. Adds to the strength and speed of any mixture of which it is a part. Place in amulet, mojo, or medicine bag to promote good health & protection. Use in herbal mixtures for the consecration of athames to strengthen and energize the ritual blade. A ginger root in the form of a human is a very powerful magical token.
Chew raw ginger or drink ginger tea before doing any magickal work, you will increase your own energy which will in turn make the spell more successful.
Ginger is considered an aphrodisiac, so use it in love spells to do with passionate love. It will also help to increase your confidence so drink a little ginger tea before heading out on a date that you might be nervous about.
If you want to smoke cleanse your home or your tools, use dried ginger. It keeps away malevolent energy and drives out any negativity you may have been feeling. If you suffer from nightmares, place some ginger under your bed in order to ease the nightmares and make you feel calmer.
Send us a voicemail
We play one listener voicemail on each episode of Talk Witchcraft, with a few exceptions. To send us a voicemail, record a voice memo on your phone and email it to welisten [at] talkwitchcraft [dot] com. Please keep in mind that we only choose voicemails that are two minutes in length or shorter (even if they’re great!).
What we’re looking for in a voicemail
Share from your personal experiences (especially experiences that we could never have) and use that to illuminate the zodiac season or theme in new ways.
Ask questions of Erica and Maggie, so we have an opportunity to respond meaningfully to your voicemail during the podcast.
Use one of these prompts: Is there something happening with you and your life that aligns with the current zodiac season or a Tarot card? How do your experiences show us something new about the magic, something that we haven’t talked about so far?
Send a voicemail even if you’re behind on the podcast. If your voicemail is about a previous episode, zodiac season, or tarot card; that doesn’t mean we won’t choose it!
Tips for recording a great voicemail
Make sure you’re somewhere quiet.
Plan what you’re going to say ahead of time, because two minutes goes quickly.
Opt for talking freely based on a bullet pointed list rather than reading word-for word from a script.
Let us know if you’d prefer to remain anonymous.
Wait, don’t go yet!
