Harnessing the Wisdom of The Hermit: A Journey of Purpose

When I first began my journey with Tarot, The Hermit card stood out to me. There’s something quietly powerful about its energy—this figure alone on a mountaintop, holding a lantern, with no one else around to see its light. In many ways, that solitude felt familiar, especially in moments when I turned inward for answers. Over time, The Hermit has become a card I return to often when I need to pause, reflect on, and refine my witchcraft practice.

If you’re feeling called to slow down and reconnect with yourself, The Hermit can be a powerful guide on your journey. Let’s explore how you can use this card as a tool for finding purpose.

The Hermit’s Wisdom: Precision in Reflection

At first glance, The Hermit might seem simple—a lone figure, a lantern, a staff—but there’s so much depth here. The lantern represents the search for truth, a symbol of illumination that guides us on our path when we seek clarity. The staff is our support, a reminder of the strength we gain when we lean into our intuition. And that vast, empty landscape? It’s not isolation—it’s space. Space to think, to feel, and to reflect. There’s beauty in that quiet emptiness.

In my witchcraft practice, I’ve found that when I approach magic with this same sense of space and purpose, everything sharpens. It’s as though the act of being intentional—whether it's in spellwork or daily tasks—invites a deeper level of understanding. The Hermit reminds us that every detail matters, and that’s where the real power lies: in taking our time to reflect and adjust.

Journaling with The Hermit

One of the most profound ways to work with The Hermit is through a simple, methodical journaling ritual that focuses on clarity and self-reflection. Here's how to do it:

  • Step 1: Begin by setting up a sacred space. Cleanse with incense, set out crystals, play music, etc. Then, light a single yellow or white candle to represent the lantern. Place The Hermit card nearby.

  • Step 2: Sit in stillness for a few moments, breathing deeply and allowing the soft glow of the candle to settle your mind. Imagine that with each breath, you're drawing in the energy of The Hermit—quiet, focused, and wise.

  • Step 3: Begin to journal. Let the words flow without judgment, trusting that your intuition will guide you. Use these prompts to help you get started:

    • “What truth am I seeking?”

    • “What am I ready to reflect on?”

    • “How can I simplify my life and focus on what truly matters?”

    • “What can I do to help make the world a better place?”

    • “How can I make more space for serving others?”

This practice is something I turn to whenever I feel like I’ve lost sight of what truly matters. It helps me pause and realign with my North Star—my core purpose—just as The Hermit does.

Grounding with The Hermit

Grounding practices are essential to any witch’s skillset, and The Hermit, which is associated with the Earth sign Virgo, provides the perfect energy for this kind of magic. Whether you’re dealing with chaotic energy or simply need to feel more connected to your guiding light, this card is a reminder to return to the basics: breathe and be intentional.

One grounding ritual I often turn to involves using simple, natural elements like stones. I take time to carefully choose stones associated with Virgo—like moss agate or mookaite jasper. Then I sit near my altar or outside in my garden, hold the stone in my hand, and breathe. Inhale. Exhale. Repeat.

Another grounding ritual is to make an herbal tea using mint and chamomile. Breathe in the scent. Take small sips of the herbal infusion, letting yourself fully taste each sip. Think about how it tastes and smells and the flavors that linger on your tongue.

Going for a short walk can also be very grounding. Just like the Hermit can’t see far beyond his feet, turn your face downward and concentrate on your steps and how it feels when your foot hits the ground and lifts up again. Pay attention to the rhythm of your footsteps—you might even want to count them.

Shadow Work with The Hermit

The Hermit also serves as a powerful guide for deeper shadow work. There’s a meticulous quality to this card’s energy that pairs beautifully with the process of uncovering and healing parts of ourselves that we often keep hidden. The lantern he carries can only light up a few feet in front of the Hermit. He must step forward and trust that he’s making the right choice before seeing the next few feet.

I’ve found that when I approach shadow work through the lens of The Hermit, it becomes less about confronting the darkness head-on and more about illuminating the path toward authentic acceptance.

In one of my most transformative shadow work rituals, I began by pulling The Hermit and asking: “What truth am I not seeing clearly?” From there, I journaled every fear, every doubt, and every piece of my inner landscape that felt obscured.

For your own shadow work ritual, try focusing on one specific area you’d like to explore. Set up a small, intentional space with The Hermit card and any other tools nad materials you feel called to use. Spend time reflecting on your emotions or actions, then ask for The Hermit’s guidance to gently reveal the truths you need to see.

Building a Shrine for The Hermit

The purpose of a shrine is to act as a reminder of its theme whenever you see it. Creating a space for The Hermit in your home is a beautiful way to continually invite this energy of purpose and introspection. When I first built a Hermit-inspired shrine, I knew it had to be simple and purposeful—just like the energy of the card itself.

For your shrine, consider including:

  • A single candle or a lantern.

  • A piece of clear quartz for clarity and insight.

  • A small branch or twig to represent the staff.

  • A small book of quotes and wisdom.

Embracing The Hermit’s Wisdom

Working with The Hermit has taught me that sometimes the most powerful magic is the simplest. It’s about showing up with intention, embracing precision in our rituals, and creating space for reflection in our everyday lives. Whether you’re seeking guidance, grounding, or clarity, The Hermit can be a steadfast companion in your witchcraft practice—reminding you that the answers you seek are often found in quiet moments of solitude and deep introspection.

As you walk your witchcraft path, I invite you to explore The Hermit’s wisdom in your magic. Take time to reflect, trust in the process, and allow yourself to be guided by your own inner light.
